Have you included everything into your disaster recovery plan?
All IT managers should know the importance of an effective disaster recovery (DR) plan. After a major disaster organisations, which do not have an adequate plan, may face multiple problems with their IT systems.
Hopefully your business will never be faced with a major disaster but it is better to be safe
than sorry. Having an effective disaster recovery plan in place will increase chances of a quick recovery when faced with a major or even minor issue.
System backups are important
You may have a good DR plan but if the plan is out of date, corrupted or in an affected
location, then your business will be under threat as a result. Backups should be taken at regular intervals to protect your business.
Disaster Recovery Plans need testing
Do you ever test your DR plan? If a disaster occurs what will happen if your plan does not
actually work as you expected? It may seem obvious that all plans have to be tested before they are put into place but many business owners feel it is not necessary.
Ensure your DR Plan is up to date
Once your have created your DR plan you should revise it on a regular basis to ensure it is up to date. Within many organisations technology may be upgraded, employees come and go and the business location may even change so the DR plan should be updated accordingly.
Prioritise the resources that should be restored first
If a disaster occurred what would you need to access first to get back on track? You will
have to be sure of your order of priority after a disaster as smaller problems can be dealt with at a later date. Important issues such as no emails or telephone line should be dealt with first as restoring file servers may be less important after a disaster has occurred.
