Change these settings to enhance your privacy

Syncing to your iCloud account or reinstalling apps could expose your private and confidential information if you do not have the relevant settings on your iPhone or iPad. As soon as the latest operating system is installed on your device the below privacy settings should be activated to secure your device.

Before you customise your phone settings, download new apps or sync data on the device you should ensure the following is checked and changed accordingly.

Limit apps from tracking your location

Many apps on Apple devices use your location in the background – even when the app is not in use. Pop-up messages such as – ‘Allow “Apple Store” to access your location even when you are not using the app’ – may sometimes show. You should select Don’t Allow to protect your privacy.

Do not allow apps to access or upload your data

Contacts, email, calendar and photos hold the most personal information for many iPhone
users. Some apps may require access to this data to be able to run successfully but not all apps should be able to access this information as in some cases your data may be uploaded to certain servers. To prevent access go to Settings > Privacy and decide which app you want to grant access to.

Find my iPhone should be enabled

The Find My iPhone app should always be enabled on your Apple devices as if you lose your phone this is the easiest way to track it down. Go to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone (or iPad) and ensure it is switched on. By selecting Send Last Location – if your device has less than 1% battery life left – your device will update the Apple servers with your last location.

Enable quicker auto-lock feature

Many Apple users have auto-lock already set for around 3 minutes. By lowering the time
taken to lock your phone you can ensure your device will be inaccessible to others if left unattended. To increase the security go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock and reduce the time.
